LED is an abbreviation for Light Emitting Diode. LED is a semiconductor light source that emits lights when applying a predefined voltage. LED is used in electronic equipment today due to its very good quality.
Construction of LED
An LED is made by combining P-type and N-type semiconductor materials. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) or gallium arsenide phosphate(GaAsP) is used in the place of silicon and germanium. This material is utilized in LED because of its extraordinary qualities. This material has this property, and it emits light, not heat, when applying voltage.
When voltage is applied across the LED terminal, it releases energy in the form of photons(light). The color of the light depends on the bandgap of the semiconductor material used in LED.
For Eg: GaAsP LED emits red light, whereas InGaN LED emits blue light.
The LED is manufactured as a forward bias device.
Principle and working of LED
Driven is a semiconductor gadget that changes over electrical energy into light energy. LED works on the principle of electroluminescence. The property of semiconductor material that converts electrical energy into light energy is called electroluminescence. LED is a forward bias semiconductor device, which means it will start working when the P terminal of the diode is connected to the positive potential of a battery and the N terminal of the device to the negative terminal of the storm. As said earlier, LED is a uni-directional device, meaning it will only allow current to flow in one direction.
When the LED is switched on, the electrons from the N side recombine with holes on the P side and release energy in the form of photons (light). The color of the light emitted by an LED depends on the materials used to make the LED. For example, red LED is made with GaAsP, and blue LED is made with InGaN. LED is a very efficient light source as it converts more than 90% of its electrical energy into light energy. Also, LED has a very long life span as it can last for up to 100,000 hours. LED is used in various applications such as indicator lights, traffic lights, flashed lights, etc.
