IAS Full Form: Indian Administrative Service

The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is the administrative arm of the Indian government. IAS officers are the backbone of the Indian bureaucracy and are responsible for implementing government policies and programs at the ground level.

The IAS was created in 1858 by the British colonial government in India. After India’s independence in 1947, the IAS continued to be the premier civil service of the Indian Union. The IAS is currently one of India’s most prestigious and sought-after career options. Every year, thousands of young men and women compete for a limited number of posts in the IAS.

The IAS is a centralized service organized into 21 cadres, each corresponding to a different state or union territory. IAS officers are posted as district collectors, development officers, or other important positions at the district, state, and central levels. They are also posted as heads of various departments and ministries at the central government level.

The IAS is known for its integrity, impartiality, and dedication to public service. IAS officers are often hailed as the “steel frame” of the Indian government because of their critical role in maintaining the smooth functioning of the government machinery.

Eligibility of IAS

To become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, you must meet the following eligibility criteria: – You must be a citizen of India.

– You need must have completed your graduation from a recognized university.

– You must have secured minimum marks in the qualifying examination as specified by the UPSC from time to time.

– You must have cleared the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the UPSC. – You must be within the age limit specified by the UPSC for appearing in the CSE. The upper age limit is 32 years for general category candidates, 35 years for OBC candidates and 37 years for SC/ST candidates. Relaxation in age limit is provided to certain candidates as per government rules.

– You must be physically fit according to the standards specified by the UPSC from time to time.

Exam Pattern-

The UPSC exam conducted for the IAS post has three following steps-

Mains exam

The Exam Pattern of IAS is as follows: The Preliminary Examination will consist of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper-II). Candidates will need to have attempt both papers.

Each paper will be two hours duration and will carry a maximum of 200 marks.

Paper I is designed to test a candidate’s ability and aptitude for selection to Indian Administrative Service and other allied services. The paper will cover such subjects generally taught at the graduation level as current events, history, polity, geography, economics, etc.

Paper-II is designed to test the candidates’ analytical skills in solving problems relating to arithmetic, data interpretation, etc. This exam will also include questions on English language comprehension skills (Class X level).

Indian Administrative Services (IAS) is one of the most coveted jobs in India. IAS officers are considered a part of the royal class due to the various facilities and perks that they enjoy. Some of the major facilities available to an IAS officer are:

1. Residence: IAS officers are provided with a bungalow complete with a maid, gardener, and security services.
2. Transport: IAS officers are provided with a car and driver for their personal use.
3. Bills: All bills, such as water, electricity, and mobile phone bills, are paid for by the government.
4. Pension: IAS officers are entitled to a lifetime pension after retirement.

Role and Responsibility of IAS Officer

The role and responsibility of an IAS officer are to ensure the smooth functioning of the administration in their area of work. They have to maintain law and order, collect government revenue, distribute funds and resources to implement policies, and advise the government while making policies for the people. An IAS officer has a lot of responsibility and therefore needs to be competent and dedicated to their job.


What is the salary of an IAS officer?

The starting salary of an IAS officer is Rs.56,100 (basic pay) + allowances. The total payments at the entry-level can be around Rs.70,000 per month. However, the salary increases with promotions and positions held. An IAS officer at the secretary-level gets a minimum of Rs.2,50,000 per month, while the Cabinet Secretary gets a minimum of Rs.4,00,000 per month. Apart from the basic pay and allowances, IAS officers also get perks and benefits like free accommodation, travel allowance, medical insurance etc.
